Zimbabwean Writer Simbarashe Kundizeza Denies AI Use After Caine Prize Win
Simbarashe Kundizeza, a writer from Zimbabwe, refuted allegations of using AI in his short story, The Blue Fighter, which secured the 2026 Caine Prize for African Writing. This denial came after Vauhini Vara's report in The Atlantic suggested that AI-detection tool Pangram flagged the work as AI-generated. Just a week prior to the article's release, Kundizeza was awarded £10,000 ($13,000). Ellah Wakatama, chair of the Caine Prize, expressed her surprise at the article's timing and clarified that AI checks are not part of the submission process. Kundizeza is set to submit draft materials for an internal review. The situation has ignited a wave of support for him on social media, with backing from numerous writers. His inspiration stemmed from a poem by South African Vangile Gantsho and personal experiences from 2002.
