British artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen has been named the recipient of this year's Erasmus Prize, an honor presented by the Praemium Erasmianum Foundation based in the Netherlands. The award includes a monetary component of 150,000 euros, approximately $172,000, along with a commemorative item—a folded paper booklet featuring text in the handwriting of the 16th-century Dutch scholar Desiderius Erasmus. McQueen is recognized for his significant contributions to the arts, particularly through films such as the Holocaust documentary 'Occupied City' from 2023, 'Ashes' from 2015, and 'Static' from 2009. He also directed the feature film '12 Years a Slave,' which earned the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2013. In recent years, McQueen has expanded his practice to include sound and light installations, exemplified by his 2024 work 'Bass' at Dia:Beacon in New York. The Erasmus Prize is not exclusively for artists; it acknowledges individuals or organizations that have made exceptional impacts in the humanities, social sciences, or arts across Europe and globally. This year's theme, 'Ecce Homo, Behold the Human Being,' aligns with McQueen's work, which the foundation noted encourages viewers to observe carefully and without bias, fostering recognition of shared humanity in a divided world.
