Veena Sahajwalla Wins 2022 Eureka Prize for Advancing Sustainable Materials Science

Professor Veena Sahajwalla, a materials scientist and engineer at UNSW, received the 2022 Celestino Eureka Prize for Promoting Understanding of Science. Her work focuses on developing green materials and sustainable products through microrecycling science, which transforms waste into valuable resources. She leads the Sustainable Materials Research and Technology (SMaRT) Centre, where innovations like Green Steel technology and MICROfactorie systems convert materials such as tires, glass, and electronics into industrial feedstocks. Sahajwalla advocates for a circular economy to reduce landfill use and support local manufacturing.
