Teyana Taylor wins Icon of the Year at BET Awards, Lauryn Hill honored

At the BET Awards in Los Angeles, Teyana Taylor received the Icon of the Year award from Janet Jackson, leading to an emotional reaction. The 35-year-old artist, who recently starred in the Oscar-winning film One Battle After Another, also won best actress, video director of the year, and fashion vanguard awards. Taylor, who began her career choreographing a Beyoncé video at age 15, earned a Golden Globe and Oscar nomination for her film role and a Grammy nomination for her album Escape Room. She trained at the Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts. Hip-hop duo Clipse won three awards, including album of the year. British singer Olivia Dean was named best new artist. Lauryn Hill received the inaugural living legend icon award and performed after a tribute featuring Nas, SZA, Doechii, Lizzo, Doja Cat, Common, and Queen Latifah. Hill, 51, rose to fame with The Fugees and released her only studio album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, in 1998.
