award · 2026-06-23

The Splash 27: The Best of Watercolor competition, which has been ongoing for more than 25 years, has revealed its top winners. Chris Krupinski, the awards juror, chose Michelle Nixon's 'Empty, Empty, Empty' (watercolor on 140-lb. cotton rag paper, 21 x 29) for its gray backdrop that conveys both despair and hope. Lyudmila Tomova Clark's 'Fiery Gate' (watercolor on paper, 24 x 18) was recognized for its vibrant energy and dynamic colors, while Michael Ridge's 'Morning Break' (watercolor on Arches 140-lb. cold-pressed paper, 15 x 29) was noted for its contrasting background and foreground. Krupinski, a Dolphin Fellow of the American Watercolor Society, boasts over 250 awards. The special issue magazine will be available on newsstands starting July 7th and digitally through Artists Network.
