SP-Arte Launches New Award Offering Brazilian Artists Residency in Niterói

The SP-Arte circuit introduces a new award in 2026 called the MECA SP-Arte ABACT Prize, connecting Brazilian artists with an artistic residency experience at Instituto MECA. The program occurs during the fair from April 8 to 12 at the Bienal Pavilion in São Paulo and is open to artists represented by galleries associated with ABACT participating in the edition. The selected artist receives a two-month residency in Niterói, including accommodation, airfare, a stipend, production funds, and curatorial support. The residency provides access to workshops and studios at Estaleiro Mac Laren, with potential inclusion in the exhibition programming at the Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói. The winner will be announced on April 9 during SP-Arte. In its inaugural year, the award received 21 applications with 41 visual artists nominated. The jury comprises notable figures from the art circuit: Bianca Bernardo, Eduardo Mac Laren, Pablo León de la Barra, Fernanda Feitosa, and Tamara Perlman, underscoring the initiative's institutional significance. Beyond financial support, the program emphasizes immersion as a transformative tool. According to curator Bianca Bernardo, artistic residencies expand trajectories by offering time, displacement, and exchange—enhanced at MECA through direct engagement with the territory, the shipyard, and communities of Ilha da Conceição and Baía de Guanabara. Established in 2024, Instituto MECA has become a new hub for experimentation in Brazil, located in an 18th-century architectural complex within an active shipyard. It develops projects intersecting memory, ancestry, and local ecosystems. At the end of each residency, works gain visibility through exhibitions at MAC Niterói, extending the reach of the research conducted.
