Sir Karl Jenkins' The Armed Man Tops Classic FM Hall of Fame 2026 as First Living Composer to Achieve Number One

Sir Karl Jenkins, a Welsh composer from Penclawdd, Swansea, has made history by becoming the first living composer to top the Classic FM Hall of Fame in 2026 with his choral work The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace. The piece, dedicated to victims of the Kosovo War and originally commissioned in 1998 for the millennium, reflects on conflict while expressing hope for peace. Nearly 90,000 public votes were cast in this year's poll, revealed by presenter Dan Walker on Monday. Jenkins noted the work's enduring relevance, having been performed globally 4,000 times since 2000, and shared that it has provided support to many facing illness, trauma, or death. In the 2026 chart, Jenkins also placed four other pieces: Adiemus at number 66, Palladio at 82, Gloria at 191, and Requiem at 300. The poll highlighted a record 40 entries from film music, with Howard Shore's score for The Lord of the Rings ranking highest for a soundtrack at number eight and John Williams' music for Schindler's List at 13. Overall, 65 entries were by living composers, including Hans Zimmer, Rachel Portman, and Ludovico Einaudi, indicating growing appeal for contemporary classical music. Despite Jenkins' success, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart remains the most represented composer with 12 works in the chart.
