Sasha Kurmaz's Red Horse Wins 2026 Kraszna-Krausz Photography Book Award

Sasha Kurmaz, a Ukrainian artist, has been awarded the 2026 Kraszna-Krausz Photography Book Award for his photobook, Red Horse, which was published by Éditions Images Vevey and designed by Nicolas Polli. This 800-page work began in 2022 amid Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, blending documentary images with the artist's notes, found visuals, and street materials. The jury, comprising artist Jermaine Francis, curator Fiona Rogers, and BJP editor Diane Smyth, chose Red Horse unanimously from numerous submissions. Other shortlisted titles included Index 2025 by Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa, The Fold by Hoda Afshar, and Too Many Products Too Much Pressure by Janet Delaney. Kurmaz will share the £10,000 prize with Onyeka Igwe, who received the 2026 Kraszna-Krausz Moving Image Book Award for June Givanni: The Making of a Pan-African Cinema Archive. Events hosted by the Kraszna-Krausz Foundation this autumn will feature Kurmaz at V&A South Kensington and Igwe at the Barbican. The longlist will be showcased at the POST x Kraszna-Krausz Photobook Weekender in Brighton & Hove on July 4–5, which includes talks, workshops, and a live Messy Truth podcast. The foundation honors Andor Kraszna-Krausz, a Hungarian publisher who established Focal Press in 1938.
