Sámi Artist Network Dáiddadállu Wins 2026 Munch Award for Freedom of Expression

The 2023 Munch Award has been awarded to the Sámi artist collective Dáiddadállu, which will receive NOK 300,000 (approximately £24,000). Established in 2014 by Elle Sofe Sara and Máret Ánne Sara, this network consists of 22 artist collaborators and emphasizes multimedia art. The Sámi people are the Indigenous inhabitants of Sápmi, which encompasses parts of northern Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. Máret Ánne Sara's 2022 Hyundai Commission at Tate Modern focused on environmental challenges in Sápmi. Dáiddadállu is involved in promoting Sámi knowledge and sustainability through the EU-funded Birgejupmi Through Art & Duodji initiative. The Munch Awards, created in 2024 to honor Edvard Munch, recognized Dáiddadállu for its commitment to Indigenous artists and the Sámi culture. Previous recipients include Rosana Paulino and Samia Halaby.
