Russia Bans Oscar-Winning Documentary 'Mr Nobody Against Putin' and Labels Director as Foreign Agent

The Russian government has officially banned the documentary film 'Mr Nobody Against Putin' and designated its director, Pavel Talankine, as a 'foreign agent.' The film, which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary in March 2026, examines the ideological indoctrination of students within the Russian school system following the country's military actions in Ukraine that began in February 2022. Talankine, a 35-year-old educator and filmmaker from Karabach in the Ural region, secretly recorded classroom activities over two years before fleeing Russia in summer 2024 with the footage. He co-directed the 90-minute documentary with American filmmaker David Borenstein. On March 27, 2026, Russia's Justice Ministry added Talankine to its registry of foreign agents, accusing him of spreading false information about government policies and opposing the Ukraine offensive. A Russian court subsequently prohibited the film's distribution on three streaming platforms within the country, citing content that promotes negative attitudes toward the government and President Vladimir Putin. Previously, Russian authorities had largely ignored the documentary, but its Oscar win prompted this legal response. Prominent figures like filmmaker Nikita Mikhalkov, a Putin supporter, have publicly criticized Talankine as a traitor, suggesting he faces potential threats. Russian propaganda now claims the children featured in the film were manipulated, and legal proceedings may be initiated against Talankine.
