RIBA National Awards 2026: 32 Buildings Honored, London Dominates

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) announced 32 buildings receiving National Awards for 2026, forming the longlist for the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize. Over half of the winners—17 out of 32—are located in London, continuing a recent trend of London-centric selections. Notable projects include a dance theatre for Sadler's Wells by O'Donnell + Tuomey, a rammed-earth house by Tuckey Design Studio, and two additions to York Minster by Tonkin Liu. In design news, British-Nigerian designer Yinka Ilori launched a 40-piece collection for high-street retailer Dunelm, evoking a 1960s or '70s nostalgia feel. Ilori selected his favorite four pieces—a swivel chair, calabash-shaped lamp, biscuit table, and sofa—in a video filmed by Dezeen. In New York, a skyscraper conversion at risk of collapse raised alarms after columns were found buckling and sagging; however, the city's fire department confirmed the entire building was not in danger. A spokesperson for developer Metro Loft Development LLC stated the affected area was a small section of one of two buildings on site. Popular projects this week included a blackened-larch extension to a farmhouse in the Highlands, a kindergarten by Kéré Architecture, and a hempcrete chicken coop in Portugal.
