Raye Takes 2026 Mercury Prize, First Pop Album to Win Since 1994

At the Utilita Arena in Newcastle, Raye was awarded the 2026 Mercury Prize for her album, This Music May Contain Hope, which debuted in March. This £25,000 accolade recognizes the finest British or Irish album of the previous year and is notable for being the first pop album to win since M People's Elegant Slumming in 1994. Raye, 28, expressed that she invested her all into the 17-track, 73-minute album, which came after a breakup. The project features contributions from Al Green and over 100 other artists. It achieved chart-topping success in the UK and garnered acclaim from outlets like Rolling Stone, NME, and BBC. Competing nominees included Olivia Dean, Sir Paul McCartney, and Kojey Radical. Last year's winner, Sam Fender, donated his award to grassroots venues.
