NanoMslide Wins 2022 ANSTO Eureka Prize for Diagnostic Technology Innovation
A collaborative research team has developed NanoMslide, a nanotechnology coating for microscope slides that enables cancer detection through color changes without traditional staining. The innovation, created by researchers from La Trobe University, University of Melbourne, Garvan Institute of Medical Research, and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, received the 2022 ANSTO Eureka Prize for Innovative Use of Technology. The technology uses nanostructures to interact with cancer cells, producing distinctive colors under standard optical microscopes. After six years of development focused on early-stage breast cancer detection, the team plans clinical trials and commercialization. This interdisciplinary project could transform medical imaging by eliminating chemical staining requirements that have been standard since the 19th century.
