Midtown Houston Announces 2026 Arts Micro Grant Recipients for Functional Public Art

Midtown Houston, an organization overseeing infrastructure and community spaces in the central neighborhood, has revealed the awardees for the first round of its 2026 Arts Micro Grants Program. The initiative provides financial support to artists and arts groups, with individual creators receiving up to eight grants of $2,500 each and one organization awarded $5,000 biannually. For the spring cycle, four artists were selected: Angel Albarran, a multidisciplinary designer; Alexandre 'Serty31' Serty, a Paris-born urban artist known as a 'Graffuturist'; Brandon Jerrod, an emerging multidisciplinary artist; and D. 'Kid Styles' Murray, an airbrush artist and hip-hop designer. Houston Met Dance secured the organizational grant. The theme for this round was 'Art that Works,' focusing on public art projects that incorporate everyday functionality. Albarran's 'Signs of Play' will install sculptural wayfinding markers with QR codes in public areas to encourage interactive participation. Serty's 'GUM + (Graphic Urban Modulation)' will modify existing concrete infrastructure with reflective chrome and fluorescent lighting to activate spaces day and night. Jerrod's 'I Am / We' involves community gatherings with guided meditation and documentary filming, while Murray plans a neighborhood-inspired mural. Houston Met Dance will coordinate a local iteration of the National Water Dance on April 18 at 3 p.m. in Midtown Park, featuring a performance by TerraForm(ed) Collective to promote environmental stewardship. The second round of applications for the 2026 cycle opens on May 4, with a deadline of May 31. This program is part of Midtown Houston's broader efforts to enhance arts programming in the area.
