Mamidakis Foundation: A Unique Model Linking Contemporary Art and Landscape in Crete

The George & Aristea Mamidakis Foundation in Crete operates a unique open-air museum with about fifty sculptures scattered across the park and spaces of the Art Minos Hotel. Founded in the 1980s, the foundation began by inviting international artists for residencies, asking them to create works inspired by the island's landscape, history, and culture. Central figure Gina Mamidakis, daughter of George and Aristea, transformed the family tradition into a cultural project emphasizing osmosis between culture, humanity, and nature. The foundation also awards the G&A Mamidakis Foundation Art Prize, established in 2019. The 2025 winner Danae Stratou created 'Virtuous Spiral,' an installation of 113 terracotta vases arranged in a spiral, inspired by the Phaistos Disc. The 2026 prize went to Canadian artists Caitlind Brown and Wayne Garrett for 'Chronotopia,' an installation made of thousands of optical lenses from the Canadian Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centre in Calgary, forming two large arched sails that fragment and multiply the landscape. Notable works in the collection include Magdalena Abakanowicz's 'The Painful Pyramids' (1993) made of barbed wire, and works by Lynda Benglis, Ileana Arnaoutou & Ismene King, Rena Papaspyrou, Theodoros, and Ingrid Fragantoni.
