MAIO Architects' Lavapiés renovation wins FAD Interior Design Award 2026
In Madrid's Lavapiés district, MAIO Architects has reimagined a 1970s apartment into a seamless domestic landscape, winning the FAD Interior Design Award 2026. The renovation, carried out by Crisduar, eliminates traditional walls, introducing three large, curved wooden structures and full-height mirrored doors to foster spatial continuity and adaptability. This innovative layout redefines circulation and incorporates storage while preserving a cohesive feel. The reflective doors enhance visual connections, dissolving the boundaries between rooms. The jury commended the project for transforming an "anodyne interior into a domestic landscape of great spatial intensity." Meticulous coordination was crucial for the uniformity of surfaces and elements, with specialized manufacturing ensuring seamless junctions. Photography credits go to José Hevia.
