Lion Green Road in Croydon Wins Stirling Prize; Centre Pompidou Paraná Delayed to 2029

award · 2026-10-17

Mary Duggan's Lion Green Road housing scheme in Croydon has won Britain's Stirling Prize, RIBA's award for the country's best new building. Commissioned for 80 council homes on a hillside, the project instead delivers 157 units across five brick towers alongside a bluebell wood. The planning application had drawn 257 objections before approval. Ian McKellen, 87, will be seen as a hologram in Simon Stephens's play An Ark, captured with 52 cameras, at Manchester's Factory International starting March 27. The Centre Pompidou's first Americas outpost, planned for Paraná, Brazil, has slipped to a 2029 opening with construction yet to begin; architect Solano Benítez said he was allotted six months for the design and used a year. Writer Snigdha Poonam joined a book-club Zoom of 20 people with cameras off, all calling her "Professor" — a scam, part of a pattern targeting authors. Tom Di Nardo has died at 89; he designed high-voltage wiring for Peco, Philadelphia's electric utility, for 36 years while reviewing music at night, filing over 1,000 stories for the Daily News and Inquirer through 2017.
