Leipzig Children's Bookstore Serifee Wins Top German Bookshop Award

The children's bookstore Serifee in Leipzig has been honored as one of Germany's best bookshops, receiving the German Bookstore Award along with two other establishments. Owner Susann Thiel, a former goldsmith who opened Serifee in 2009 after entering the book trade through a job creation scheme, was recognized for creating a community-focused space in the Feinkost cultural center. The award includes a €25,000 prize, which may fund practical improvements like new furniture or cleaning equipment. Thiel emphasizes the shop's role as a welcoming 'place of encounter' where customers often leave with both books and positive experiences.
