Le Sorelle Macaluso Wins Best Film at Nastri d'Argento 2021

award · 2026-04-27

Emma Dante's "Le sorelle Macaluso" won Best Film at the 2021 Nastri d'Argento awards, held at the MAXXI in Rome instead of the traditional Teatro antico di Taormina for the second consecutive year. The film, which premiered at the 77th Venice Film Festival, follows four sisters trapped in grief and originated from a theatrical work. Susanna Nicchiarelli's "Miss Marx" was named Film of the Year. Pietro Castellitto won Best Debut Director for "I predatori," and Sydney Sibilla's "L'incredibile storia dell'Isola delle Rose" won Best Comedy. Teresa Saponangelo was awarded Best Actress for "Il buco in testa," a small film from the Turin Film Festival. The awards also introduced a new rule: the Best Film prize now includes the Best Producer. Laura Delli Colli, President of the Sindacato Nazionale Giornalisti Cinematografici Italiani, noted that this edition had a record-low number of nominations (max seven) and included many low-budget and platform-released films. Special awards included a Nastro di Platino to Sophia Loren for "La vita davanti a sé," a Nastro Europeo to Colin Firth, and a Nastro Speciale to Renato Pozzetto for "Lei mi parla ancora." The ceremony was attended by a larger audience compared to the previous year's restricted edition.
