Kyoto Prize, Art Fairs, and AI Art Award Highlight July 2026 News

Laurie Anderson has been named the 2026 Kyoto Prize laureate in Arts and Philosophy by Japan's Inamori Foundation, receiving JPY 100 million (USD 620,000) for her avant-garde multimedia work. The award ceremony is set for November 10 at the Kyoto International Conference Center. Meanwhile, Art Collaboration Kyoto (ACK) returns for its sixth edition from November 7–9 at the same venue, featuring 63 galleries from 18 countries, with first-time participants including Jeffrey Deitch, Hauser & Wirth, and Modern Art. The fair introduces 'ACK Intersections,' a guest-curated exhibition by Leonhard Bartolomeus, and special exhibitions at Ryosokuin Temple (Andrew Cranston) and Komyoin Temple (Yuka Kashihara). Tokyo Gendai will hold its fourth edition from September 11–13 at PACIFICO Yokohama, with 63 participants including Pace Gallery, Sadie Coles HQ, and Ceysson & Bénéthière. A new sector, 'Miki (Trunk),' focuses on works on paper. Additionally, Christopher Kulendran Thomas has won the 2026 Human AI Art Award, jointly launched by Deutsche Telekom and Kunstmuseum Bonn. His work 'Peace Core (surround)' uses an AI algorithm to re-edit pre-9/11 US TV broadcasts and will be exhibited at the Human AI Art Space in Bonn through September 13.
