Kokuyo Design Awards 2026 Winners Announced with 'Hamon' Theme

The 2026 Kokuyo Design Awards, Japan's prestigious stationery competition organized by the 120-year-old firm KOKUYO, announced its winners last month. This year's theme 'hamon: design that resonates' challenged designers to submit concepts based on personal experiences with potential societal resonance. The Grand Prix went to Hiroki Kannari's 'Before Note,' a customizable 'pre-notebook' bundle that transforms passive objects into active personal processes. Merit awards included Takashi Higashide's 'Gram' pen series exploring subtle weight variations, Yuji Tsukamoto's 'Notebooks Identified by Edges' with colored edges for organization and sustainability, and Mizuki Igarashi & Rara Takizawa's 'Gradience Diary' using gradients instead of rigid boxes. Additional recognized designs included Tasuku Denno's honeycomb-structured 'Red and White Packing Paper,' Ryoichi Nakamura's faint-line 'AWAI' pen encouraging ambiguity, Yohei Oki's 'OVERLAP' notebook with intersecting lines, Yoshihiro Matsumura's mist-inspired 'KASUMIORI' reading guide, and Nao Momoishi's spotlight-casting pen for inspiration capture. The annual competition, running for nearly 25 years, typically receives around 1,500 entries for non-commercialized concepts, with winners gaining production opportunities.
