Karim Rashid Launches Pink Blob Award as a Manifesto for Emotion-Driven Design

Karim Rashid and his studio have introduced the Pink Blob Award, an international design prize that functions as a cultural statement advocating for emotionally resonant and forward-looking design. The award challenges conventional design metrics by prioritizing emotional impact over functionality, efficiency, or commercial success, reflecting a broader shift where design shapes experiences and identities. It is structured into five categories: Endorsement of the Body, focusing on fashion and wearables; Liquid Domesticity, for fluid home environments; Emotional Technology, involving AI and digital systems; Democratic Radicalism, for accessible mass-produced objects; and Spatial Humanism, covering architecture as emotional infrastructure. A jury including Fabio Novembre and Ross Lovegrove will evaluate entries, reinforcing the award's aim to highlight innovative design. The open call welcomes participants from students to established studios, with submissions accepted from March 30, 2026, to June 30, 2026, and finalists announced in October. Winners will gain global visibility through showcases and promotion on Rashid's platforms, positioning the award as a launchpad for designers. This initiative rejects nostalgia and minimalism, promoting a vision of design as an adaptive system that fosters boldness and inclusivity in contemporary practice.
