Junya Ishigami Wins Inaugural Barragán Prize, Launched by La Cuadra with Bottega Veneta
Junya Ishigami, a 52-year-old architect from Japan, has made history as the inaugural winner of The Barragán Prize, an international architecture accolade launched by La Cuadra San Cristóbal and Bottega Veneta. This award, which honors architects who defy traditional norms, was bestowed on him on October 9. A jury that featured Kazuyo Sejima and Marina Abramović selected Ishigami, who will receive $100,000, a medal, and a position on the jury for upcoming awards. His architectural endeavors delve into themes of structure, scale, landscape, and nature. Notable works include the KAIT Workshop and the Serpentine Pavilion, which drew criticism regarding intern treatment. In March 2023, he was also awarded the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize.
