Jazz Journalists Association Honors 34 Grassroots Advocates as 2026 Jazz Heroes

The Jazz Journalists Association (JJA) has recognized 34 individuals as Jazz Heroes for 2026, honoring grassroots cultural contributors from 32 locations, including London for the first time. Among the honorees are bassist Henry 'The Skipper' Franklin, immigration lawyer Bill Martinez, pianist Fiona Ross, and Lauren Parks, who is spearheading the initiative to renovate Miles Davis's childhood residence. Other notable recipients include Kevin Struthers and Houston deejay Tierney Malone, who will accept his award during the 'Coltrane 100' concert on April 10. Additional award ceremonies are scheduled for Derrick Lucas on April 14 and Maggie Brown on April 29. Established in 1987, the JJA also conducts the 31st Annual JJA Jazz Awards, with winners to be revealed on May 5.
