Ivor Novello Awards Highlight Gender Imbalance in British and Irish Songwriting

The 2026 Ivor Novello award nominations reveal significant gender disparity among British and Irish songwriters, with male nominees outnumbering female nominees by more than two to one. Among the 61 recognized songwriters and composers, 40 are men, 19 are women, and two identify as non-binary. Tempest competes against himself in the best contemporary song category with two tracks from his latest album. Research from the University of Southern California's Annenberg Inclusion Initiative indicates a decline in female representation among popular songwriters, dropping from 18.9% in 2024 to 14.5% in 2025. The awards ceremony, scheduled for May 21 in London, honors exceptional songwriting and screen composition while positioning itself as a celebration of human creativity amid concerns about artificial intelligence's impact on musicians. Notable nominations span established artists like Lily Allen, Florence + the Machine, and Gorillaz alongside emerging talents such as CMAT, Jerskin Fendrix, and Lola Young. Categories include best album, contemporary song, song musically and lyrically, most-performed work, rising star, film score, and television soundtrack. The best original film score category features only male composers, underscoring ongoing challenges for women in certain musical fields. Last year's songwriter of the year was Charli xcx, with additional achievement awards to be presented at the upcoming event.
