Gazan Heritage Professionals Abdul Latif Hashim and Haneen Al-Amassi Win 2026 Unesco/Jikji Memory of the World Prize
On September 4, in Cheongju, Korea, Unesco Director General Khaled El-Enany announced that historian Abdul Latif Hashim and researcher-engineer Haneen Al-Amassi are the recipients of the 2026 Unesco/Jikji Memory of the World Prize. This prestigious award, which comes with a $40,000 grant, honors contributions to the preservation of documentary heritage and marks the first time individuals have received it since 2004. Out of 58 nominations, Hashim and Al-Amassi formed a team that salvaged rare documents from the ruins of the Medieval Great Omari Mosque Library in Gaza, which was devastated by Israeli shelling in December 2023. They successfully preserved over 25,000 pages from the Mamluk and Ottoman eras, with support from the British Library and the local NGO Eyes on Heritage, focusing on enhancing preservation efforts in Gaza.
