French Filmmaker Claire Denis to Receive Golden Coach Award at 2026 Cannes Directors' Fortnight

The Society of Film Directors and Directors (SRF) announced on April 1 that French director Claire Denis will be honored with the Golden Coach award at the opening of the Directors' Fortnight on May 13, 2026, during the Cannes Film Festival. The award recognizes Denis's extensive and independent body of work, which her peers describe as offering a cinema that breathes, touches, and questions, with each frame serving as a terrain for experience and emotion. Her films, noted for their formal rigor and political engagement without didacticism, explore colonial legacies, borders, identities, and desires. Denis succeeds American director Todd Haynes as the recipient. Her latest film, 'Le Cri des gardes,' an adaptation of Bernard-Marie Koltès's play 'Combat de nègre et de chiens,' starring frequent collaborator Isaach de Bankolé, is set for release on April 8. The SRF's letter to Denis praised her cinema of friction and uncertainty, highlighting its attention to human destinies and inventive storytelling across works such as 'Chocolat,' 'Beau Travail,' 'High Life,' and 'Stars at Noon.'
