Freelands Award shortlist revealed for UK regional institutions supporting mid-career female artists

The Freelands Award has shortlisted six regional art institutions in the UK, offering £100,000 to facilitate a solo exhibition for a mid-career female artist. The chosen organization will receive £75,000 for the exhibition, while £25,000 will be awarded to the artist. The nominees are First Site in Colchester, Hepworth Wakefield in Yorkshire, John Hansard Gallery at the University of Southampton, MAC in Belfast, MK Gallery in Milton Keynes, and Towner Art Gallery in Eastbourne. The announcement aligns with the release of the Freelands Foundation Research Report by Dr. Kate McMillan from King's College London, highlighting ongoing gender inequalities in the art sector. The winning institution and artist will be revealed in Autumn 2019. Past winners include Jacqueline Donachie in 2016, Lis Rhodes in 2017, and Veronica Ryan in 2018.
