Blackpool, Milton Keynes, Sheffield and Wrexham Shortlisted for UK City of Culture 2029

The cities vying for the 2029 UK City of Culture designation are Blackpool, Milton Keynes, Sheffield, and Wrexham. The announcement of the winner will take place in May, marking the fifth recipient of the title, following Derry-Londonderry, Hull, Coventry, and Bradford. Each contender is guaranteed a minimum of £125,000 in government support, while the victorious city will receive £10 million dedicated to cultural initiatives. This shortlist was derived from an initial longlist of nine, which included Inverness, Ipswich, Middlesbrough, Portsmouth, and Swindon. Blackpool promotes its iconic tower and dance festival; Milton Keynes highlights Bletchley Park; Sheffield focuses on its musical legacy; and Wrexham, home to Wrexham AFC, aspires to be "the world's most playful place." Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy commended the cultural pride of the shortlisted cities.
