Anthony Braxton Wins 2026 Edward MacDowell Medal

Composer Anthony Braxton has been named the 66th recipient of the Edward MacDowell Medal, one of the oldest honors in the arts. The award recognizes his five-decade career redefining contemporary music through improvisation, structural experimentation, and ritual. Braxton's influences include John Coltrane and Karlheinz Stockhausen. His output spans solo performances from the late 1960s, a landmark quartet in the 1980s, and the day-long Sonic Genome Project. The selection committee was chaired by Tyshawn Sorey and included composers Du Yun, Marcos Balter, Miya Masaoka, Fay Victor, and New Yorker critic Alex Ross. MacDowell Executive Director Chiwoniso Kaitano stated that Braxton's career reflects the organization's values of curiosity and boundary-crossing. Medal Day will open the normally private campus to the public, allowing visitors to explore artist studios. The award underscores Braxton's enduring cultural significance and influence across generations.
