Anne Carson Wins Nobel Prize in Literature, a Critic's Guide to Her Essential Books

award · 2026-10-21

This month, the Nobel Prize in Literature was granted to Anne Carson by the Swedish Academy, acknowledging her contributions in essays, poetry, and translations of classical works by Sappho, Euripides, and Sophocles. Among her notable works is "Glass, Irony & God," which features "The Glass Essay," a contemplation on the conclusion of a romantic relationship. Her 2001 work, "The Beauty of the Husband," which won the T. S. Eliot Prize, intertwines tango with ancient mythology. "Autobiography of Red" reimagines the tale of Geryon and Herakles as a same-sex love story. Additionally, she has a book that includes translations of Mimnermos and the essay "The Anthropology of Water." The Academy remains committed to recognizing poet-translators. Upcoming releases include Tessa Hadley's collection in February and Colm Tóibín's "The Bridge" in December.
