AAP Magazine's 55th Edition Photo Contest Highlights Women as Subjects and Creators

All About Photo (AAP) Magazine has announced the results of its 55th edition photography competition, dedicated to showcasing women both as photographers and as subjects. The contest, titled 'AAP Magazine 55: Women,' aims to address the historical marginalization of women in photography by celebrating their creativity, resilience, and diversity globally. Italian photographer Silvia Alessi won first place for her series 'The Cut,' which explores hair as a symbol of control, identity, and resistance, focusing on Afghan women who continue beauty salon work secretly despite Taliban bans. The winning image depicts a young Afghan girl who fled alone to Pakistan, using fabric and scissors to convey vulnerability and strength. Second place went to Natalya Saprunova (France/Russia) for 'Ancestral heritage,' portraying an Evenki craftswoman in Siberia, while third place was awarded to Angelika Kollin (Estonia) for a portrait of Cynthia, a matriarch in an African community. The publication selected 25 photographers in total, including 17 women and 8 men, with merit awards given to additional participants such as Ezio Gianni Murzi (Italy), Sebastian Sardi (Sweden), and Cheryl Clegg (USA), among others. The images span various genres, including portraiture, documentary, and candid photography, highlighting themes like cultural heritage, labor, mental health, and equity. The contest underscores the magazine's commitment to amplifying women's voices in photography, with winning works available on the AAP website. This edition reflects broader efforts to promote gender diversity in the art world, offering a platform for underrepresented perspectives.
