Yayoi Kusama Retrospective Opens at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam

exhibition · 2026-07-26

The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam has just launched an important retrospective of Yayoi Kusama, who was born in Matsumoto in 1929 and passed away in Tokyo in 2026. This exhibition, which has previously been shown at Fondation Beyeler in Basel and Museum Ludwig in Cologne, represents the final project with the artist before her death in August. It includes pieces from her entire career, featuring early works from Japan, iconic New York pieces like Infinity Nets and Aggregation: One Thousand Boats (1963), as well as her well-known polka-dot pumpkins. Curated by Leontine Coelewij, around fifty pieces, many of which are new to the public, were sourced from various museums in Japan. The exhibition runs until January 17, 2027, at Museumplein 10, Amsterdam.
