Silvestro Lega Bicentennial Exhibition Opens in Modigliana
The Pinacoteca Comunale in Modigliana is honoring Silvestro Lega's 200th anniversary with the exhibition titled "Silvestro Lega. La causa della patria, la causa dell'arte," which will be open until December 13. Curated by Gianfranco Brunelli and Elisabetta Matteucci, the showcase includes forty artworks that reevaluate Lega's significance as a co-founder of the Macchiaioli movement. Organized into five sections, the exhibition traces Lega's artistic journey from 1859–1861, during the Second Italian War of Independence, to his later, more personal creations. Key highlights are Curiosità (1866), Mazzini morente (1873), L'educazione al lavoro (1863), La passeggiata in giardino (1864–68), and Il pergolato (1868), reflecting his unique narrative and expressive style.
Fatti principali
- The exhibition "Silvestro Lega. La causa della patria, la causa dell'arte" is held at the Pinacoteca Comunale in Modigliana (Forlì-Cesena) for the 200th anniversary of the artist's birth.
- It is curated by Gianfranco Brunelli and Elisabetta Matteucci and features forty works, on view until December 13.
- Silvestro Lega co-founded the Macchiaioli movement with Giovanni Fattori; the group emerged in Florence between 1855 and 1861, centered on the Caffè Michelangelo, and preceded Impressionism by ten years in abandoning academic rigidity and painting outdoors.
- The exhibition is divided into five sections: early training and Purist renewal between Mussini and Ciseri; the Risorgimento generation at war (1859–1861); the Macchia and the search for moral truth during the Piagentina years; the elegy of sorrow from Bellariva to Gabbro; and the popular choice of the late Gabbro years.
- Key works include Curiosità (1866), L'educazione al lavoro (1863), La passeggiata in giardino (1864–68), Il pergolato (1868), and Mazzini morente (1873).
- The exhibition includes portraits of Risorgimento figures such as Mazzini and Garibaldi; in the general's portrait, light from a cloudy sky accentuates the red shirt, and his gaze conveys melancholy over the undemocratic outcome of Unification.
- Mazzini morente draws on ancient models, particularly the Tuscan Quattrocento and Giotto, reflecting the Macchiaioli's painterly revolution as a knowledgeable renewal rather than a superficial break.
- Lega and Fattori shared patriotic fervor and a revolutionary aesthetic, finding inspiration in everyday life, ordinary landscapes, and small gestures defined by patches of color rather than grand frescoes or heroic deeds.
