Sarah Moon's 'Orizzonte' Transforms Venice's Redentore Garden into a Multisensory Installation

Sarah Moon, the internationally renowned photographer born in Vichy in 1941, presents 'Orizzonte. Un giardino a Venezia' at the Orto Giardino del Redentore on the Giudecca in Venice, on view until October 6. The exhibition, set in a garden recently restored by the Venice Gardens Foundation, combines photography, video, architecture, music, and scent into a single sensory experience. Moon's career has moved from fashion photography to a freer personal practice encompassing art photography and video, and her ethereal, mysterious visual language finds an ideal setting in the Redentore garden, where the severe yet delicate harmony of Palladian architecture and the aromas of medicinal herbs engage in continuous dialogue with her works. The centerpiece is a four-minute video made specifically for the occasion, whose hypnotic slow-moving images suspend ordinary perception of Venice, accompanied by enveloping music by Arvo Pärt. The city appears rarefied, silent, and mysterious. The project is conceived as a synesthetic operation that places different languages in relation, allowing each to amplify the perception of the others. The visit concludes in a patio overlooking the lagoon, where visitors can sit and contemplate the western islands, a moment described as almost necessary after immersion in images, scents, and music. The exhibition is curated as an intimate alternative to Venice's more crowded cultural offerings. The venue is located at Calle dei Frati, Giudecca 194/A.
