Santina Pompeo's "Memory Foam" Photo Exhibition on Vajont Memory Opens in Susegana

• "Memory Foam" by photographer Santina Pompeo opens Thursday 17 September at 18:30 and runs 18 September to 17 October 2026 at the Arte & Cultura space in Susegana's municipal headquarters, province of Treviso
• The project juxtaposes images of the Vajont territory before and after the 9 October 1963 disaster, when the Monte Toc landslide sent a wave over the largely intact dam toward Longarone and other villages, killing 1,917 people
• Pompeo began the project in 2023 on the sixtieth anniversary and it remains open and expanding, with diptychs pairing present-day views and past images from houses, archives, libraries, associations and local photographic collections
• The title refers to memory foam, a material that retains the imprint of weight, heat and pressure, used as a metaphor for the territory's new form after the wound of the disaster
• Pompeo gathered testimonies from residents including Giacomina, Franca, Italo and Bepi, the butcher who accompanied her in his Panda searching for a mirror still existing at Codissago
• During research Pompeo reached the summit of Monte Toc at about 2,000 metres and fell on the descent, fracturing an ankle bone and a ligament and facing three months of immobility
• On Saturday 3 October 2026 at 15:30, within the 22nd edition of Libri in Cantina at the Biblioteca del Castello di San Salvatore, the volume "Memory Foam" published by Antiga Edizioni will be presented
• On Saturday 10 October 2026 at 15:00 survivors from Longarone and Casso will give live testimonies in Susegana's council chamber, and on Saturday 17 October 2026 at 20:30 Stefania Carlesso performs "Tina Merlin – La donna del Vajont" at the Teatro parrocchiale "Beata Giuliana di Collalto"
