Sang Woo Kim's 'Façades' Explores Identity at Galerie Sébastien Bertrand

Sang Woo Kim, a Korean artist born in Seoul in 1994 and long based in London, presents his solo exhibition 'Façades' at Galerie Sébastien Bertrand, located in a former Cézanne family residence in Bourron-Marlotte, France. The show features five oil paintings that serve as self-portraits, each varying in pose, angle, and gaze. Kim's practice centers on the question 'How does visibility work?', stemming from his experience as a young immigrant in Europe and his early experimentation with oil painting. The intimate, crypt-like setting of the gallery enhances the meditative quality of the works. Kim's paintings engage with art historical precedents, particularly Claude Monet's Rouen Cathedral series, by exploring light and perception. The exhibition runs alongside other cultural events and highlights Kim's ongoing investigation of identity, representation, and the dynamics of encounter and sharing.
