Paul Heber-Percy's "Last House Before the Far-Off" Opens at England & Co, London
England & Co in London presents Paul Heber-Percy's solo exhibition "Last House Before the Far-Off" from 7 to 24 October, with a text by Rita Selvaggio. The show gathers paintings and works on paper in which imagined landscapes, suspended diagrams and rooms emerging from mist give distance the precision of close-at-hand things. Two canvases, Theia (2024) and Theia ii (2024), take their name from the celestial body of the giant-impact hypothesis, the collision held to have produced the Moon; in Theia, sand is mixed into the acrylic so the surface resists light at the scale of a grain. The Antiphon paintings (2024–2026) place invented white forms above trees, water and valleys, their exactness withholding the order that would make them legible. A Room Without (2024) sets a staircase, chair and lit passage among clouds, scaled to a body that cannot reach them. The Notices (2020) are small graphite frottages on newsprint. The title comes from "Eingang," the opening poem of Rainer Maria Rilke's The Book of Images. Selvaggio's essay also cites Antonio Prete's Trattato della lontananza (Bollati Boringhieri, 2008), Yves Bonnefoy's L'Arrière-pays (1972) and Lorna Martens's essay "Rilke's 'Schauen'." The exhibition closes with The Far-Off (2026), where a low light lingers among dark trees.
