Marion Weiss and Michael Manfredi on Sustainability, Public Space and Their Studio's Upcoming Projects

architecture-design · 2026-10-20

In a conversation with Abitare, architects Marion Weiss and Michael Manfredi reflect on their architectural firm, established in 1989 after their introduction at Romaldo Giurgola's office. Weiss originates from California's Bay Area, whereas Manfredi is from Rome. They hold teaching positions at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard, respectively, and their team consists of 45 collaborators. Ongoing projects feature the US embassy in New Delhi, the restoration of Edward Durell Stone's structure, and a planned open-air theatre for Lincoln Center set for 2028. Their completed projects include the Seattle Art Museum's museum-park and Hunter's Point South in Queens, which was finalized in 2018. They advocate for sustainability and critique educational silos while supporting the 15-minute city idea.
