GNAMC Revisits 1985 Fendi–Lagerfeld Show with 'AFTER' Exhibition in Rome

exhibition · 2026-10-12

In October 1985, the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome launched 'Un percorso di lavoro. Fendi / Karl Lagerfeld,' igniting political debate regarding the presence of a private fashion brand within a public museum. Curated by Ida Panicelli, this exhibition showcased fashion as a form of art during the postmodern era. Currently, the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea (GNAMC) revisits this theme with 'AFTER,' under the curation of Maria Luisa Frisa. This new exhibition reinterprets the 1985 format, exploring the Fendi–Lagerfeld partnership from 1965 to 2026, emphasizing Lagerfeld's groundbreaking creations and the backing of the Fendi sisters. 'AFTER' is on display until October 25 at GNAMC, Via delle Belle Arti, 131, Rome.

Fatti principali

  • The original exhibition 'Un percorso di lavoro. Fendi / Karl Lagerfeld' opened in October 1985 at the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome.
  • It provoked political controversy, including a parliamentary question, because a private fashion house was entering a state museum.
  • Ida Panicelli was the curator of the Galleria's 20th-century department at the time and organized the 1985 show.
  • The current exhibition 'AFTER' is curated by Maria Luisa Frisa at the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea (GNAMC) in Rome.
  • 'AFTER' reactivates the 1985 layout and is structured in two parts: 1965–1985 and 1986–2026.
  • Karl Lagerfeld (Hamburg, 1933 – Neuilly-sur-Seine, 2019) collaborated with Fendi; the Fendi sisters, especially Carla, gave him creative freedom.
  • The show runs until October 25 at GNAMC, Via delle Belle Arti, 131, Rome.
  • Lagerfeld said of the 1985 show: 'Yesterday is past. Today is passing. Only the future interests and intrigues me.'
