FREITAG's Container Tower Marks 20 Years in Zurich with Upcycling Exhibition

architecture-design · 2026-09-14

The FREITAG Flagship Store in Zurich, housed in a tower built from 19 repurposed shipping containers, celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2025. Originally intended as a temporary structure, the tower was assembled in just six months after FREITAG acquired a small unused plot in the Gerold-Areal area in 2005. The containers, salvaged from the port of Hamburg, were stacked to form what has been called the city's "smallest skyscraper." The building's industrial aesthetic—exposed sheet metal and rust—has become an iconic image of Zurich West, which has transformed from an industrial zone into one of the city's most dynamic districts. Despite its provisional building permit and fixed-term lease, the structure's modular design allowed for expansion: two containers were added in 2010, and after energy efficiency upgrades in 2014, the tower received definitive approval. In 2019, the structure underwent renovation and repainting. In 2026, photovoltaic panels will be installed on the container roofs as a step toward energy autonomy. A Repair Kiosk opened alongside the tower in 2025, extending the brand's philosophy of prolonging the life of used objects. To mark the anniversary, FREITAG is opening the exhibition "A SECOND LIFE – Used Materials, New Purposes" on the tower's upper floors, dedicated to the history of upcycling and the origins of the Flagship Store, featuring previously unseen archival materials.
