In vista dell'apertura del Centro Presidenziale Obama a Chicago, Dezeen esamina 13 biblioteche presidenziali statunitensi completate, da Herbert Hoover a George W. Bush. La prima biblioteca formalizzata fu quella di Franklin D. Roosevelt nel 1941, istituita insieme all'Archivio Nazionale e all'Amministrazione dei Registri degli Stati Uniti (NARA). Il Presidential Libraries Act del 1955 incoraggiò i presidenti a donare materiali. Ogni presidente sceglie un architetto e finanzia la costruzione privatamente, prima che la NARA gestisca il sito. I presidenti repubblicani spesso scelgono studi tradizionali; i democratici prediligono il modernismo. Tra i progetti degni di nota figurano la biblioteca spaziale di John F. Kennedy di IM Pei (1979), la biblioteca brutalista di Lyndon B. Johnson di Gordon Bunshaft (1971) e la biblioteca a sbalzo in vetro di William J. Clinton di James S Polshek (2004). La biblioteca di Ronald Reagan è la più grande per metratura. Tre biblioteche sono in corso: il grattacielo di Donald Trump a Miami, il centro di Barack Obama a Chicago e la biblioteca solo digitale di Joe Biden. La biblioteca di Theodore Roosevelt di Snøhetta nel Dakota del Nord è quasi completata ma non è affiliata alla NARA.
