Cyprien Gaillard's 'Deterrent' at Kunsthaus Bregenz Questions Public Space Control

Cyprien Gaillard's solo exhibition, titled 'When you expect flutes, it's whistles,' is currently on display at Kunsthaus Bregenz until October 4, 2026. The highlight of the exhibition is his latest film, 'Deterrent,' which examines the use of classical music as a deterrent in public areas. Drawing inspiration from his time in California's San Fernando Valley, the film, shot on 35mm and later digitized, juxtaposes imagery from the United States and Europe, featuring locations such as a 7-Eleven in Helsingør and graffiti-laden streets in Los Angeles. The film's score includes compositions by Saint-Saëns and The Shangri-Las. The exhibition also includes 'Visitant (no dancing 2020–2021)' and 'Chute,' along with Gaillard's ongoing polaroid series 'Geographical Analogies.' 'Deterrent' is set to be co-produced with Fondazione Prada in Milan, where it will be exhibited in December.
