Cecily Brown's "A sunset, a ruin, a crowd and a battle" Opens at Thomas Dane Gallery Naples

exhibition · 2026-10-16

From 29 September to 19 December 2026, the Thomas Dane Gallery in Naples will showcase "A sunset, a ruin, a crowd and a battle," an exhibition by Cecily Brown. This display includes approximately thirty paintings and drawings that delve into the Mediterranean summer as a battleground of visual and historical narratives. The featured artwork, "A sunset, a ruin, a crowd and a battle" (2025), encapsulates centuries of history, while "Sorrento Sunset" (2025–26) reinterprets vacation scenes through overlapping figures and fragmented viewpoints. Additionally, "Angelina, the waitress at the pizzeria" (2025) highlights the significance of labor in tourism. Brown's drawings draw inspiration from Giorgio de Chirico, reimagining metaphysical environments filled with tourists. Her earlier works include "We Didn't Mean to Go to Sea" (2019) and "The Triumph of Death" (2022), which shift the focus from the sea to the mainland.
