Caravaggio's Maria Maddalena Debuts in Germany with New Berlinde De Bruyckere Sculpture at Italian Embassy in Berlin

exhibition · 2026-09-19

For the first time in Germany, Caravaggio's *Maria Maddalena in Estasi* (1606) is on display at the Italian Embassy in Berlin, accompanied by a contemporary sculpture from Berlinde De Bruyckere (b. Ghent, 1964). The exhibition, which began on September 11 during Berlin Art Week, will continue until September 25, 2026. Curated by Tjioe Meyer-Hecken and Felipe Schwager, this showcase bridges two artistic creations across four centuries, examining the body as a boundary between the seen and the unseen. Caravaggio's artwork, which was rediscovered in 2014 and verified by scholars including Mina Gregori, interacts with De Bruyckere's *M.M. MMXXVI* (2026), highlighting the physical manifestation of the sacred and its enigmatic nature.
