Caravaggio's 'Boy Bitten by a Lizard' to Show in Porto Ercole, Where the Painter Died

exhibition · 2026-09-23

An exhibition featuring a version of Caravaggio's 'Boy Bitten by a Lizard' will take place in Porto Ercole, the location of the artist's death on July 18, 1610, at the age of 39. This showcase, curated by Pierluigi Carofano and supported by the Comune di Monte Argentario, is scheduled from September 27 to October 25 at Chiesa di Sant'Erasmo. The oil on canvas, part of a private collection in Rome, was attributed to Caravaggio by Roberto Longhi in 1958. While some scholars question its authenticity, considering it a copy, the original was created around 1595–1596. Admission is free, with the first day’s hours from 2:30 pm to 11 pm and from 10 am to 7 pm thereafter, including free guided tours.
