exhibition · 2026-07-29

From 30 September 2026 to 31 January 2027, the Bibliothèque nationale de France will host "Photographies japonaises de la Bibliothèque nationale de France. Scènes, signes, sensations" at its François-Mitterrand location in Paris. This exhibition showcases 300 pieces, comprising 250 photographic prints and around fifty rare books, representing eighty years of Japanese photography. Curators Héloïse Conésa, Dominique Versavel, and Yoshiaki Kai have included nearly one hundred photographers in the display. The BnF's collection of modern Japanese photography began in the late 1960s and now encompasses almost 4,000 prints. The exhibition delves into themes ranging from postwar trauma to cultural interactions with France, highlighting various styles and providing a comprehensive overview of Japanese photography's history.
