YuJung Jung's TOBI: A Keyring-Sized Fortune Device

Industrial designer YuJung Jung has created TOBI, a keyring-sized electronic device that dispenses random fortune messages with the press of a button. The device, which measures 58 by 47 by 25 millimeters, is designed to offer a single line of text per interaction, drawing on the appeal of horoscopes and tarot readings but moving the experience away from smartphones. TOBI features a compact matte polycarbonate body available in green and blue, with a display occupying most of the front face and controls pushed to the edge. Jung describes the concept as a 'cyber friend,' and the device is intended to feel more like a character than generic electronics. The interaction is simple: holding the button on the upper right for two seconds powers it on, and subsequent presses call up new one-line messages at random. The design deliberately avoids the endless scrolling of phone apps, offering a finite, self-contained experience. The keyring format integrates the device into everyday carry, alongside keys or clipped to a bag, positioning it within the tradition of charms and trinkets carried for luck. Jung developed the proportions through repeated sketches, refining the relationship between screen and casing. The project is showcased on Behance, and the device is presented as a concept, not yet available for purchase. The design highlights a growing trend of dedicated physical devices for digital rituals, offering a tangible alternative to screen-based interactions.
