Vienna's packed fall art calendar: 5 must-see events from mid-September to mid-October

festival-fair · 2026-05-04

Vienna's fall art season is dense with overlapping events from mid-September to mid-October, raising concerns about oversaturation. Curated by_2018 (Sept 14–Oct 13) features international curators staging exhibitions across 21 top galleries, including Italians Lorenzo Giusti (GAMeC Bergamo) at Galerie Hubert Winter with Simone Fattal and Francesco Gennari, and Attilia Fattori Franchini at Galerie Nathalie Halgand with a group of artists. Vienna Contemporary 2018 (Sept 27–30) returns to Marx Halle under artistic director Christina Steinbrecher-Pfandt, with a Focus section on Armenia, Zone 1 for under-40 Austrian artists, and a new Explorations section. The fair hosts 109 galleries from 27 countries, 38 Austrian; Italian participation doubles to four: Alessandro Casciaro (Bolzano), Doris Ghetta (Ortisei), Privateview (Turin), and Michela Rizzo (Venice). Parallel Vienna (Sept 25–30) positions itself as an alternative fair in disused buildings, with about 400 exhibitors selling directly from artist-run spaces. Vienna Design Week (Sept 28–Oct 7), directed by Lilli Hollein, takes over the abandoned Sophienspital (built 1879–1881) and features Poland as Guest Country, plus Stadtarbeit and Passionswege sections. Die Lange Nacht der Museen (Oct 6) opens 713 sites across Austria from 6 PM to 1 AM.
