Venice Film Festival 2022: Full Lineup Announced for 79th Edition

The 79th Venice International Film Festival, running from August 31 to September 11, 2022, on the Lido di Venezia, celebrates its 90th anniversary since its founding in 1932 and the 10th anniversary of Biennale College Cinema. President Roberto Cicutto opened the press conference, while Artistic Director Alberto Barbera presented the program. Five Italian films compete: Gianni Amelio's 'Il signore delle formiche', Susanna Nicchiarelli's 'Chiara', Emanuele Crialese's 'L'immensità', Andrea Pallaoro's 'Monica', and Luca Guadagnino's 'Bones and All'. The opening film is Noah Baumbach's 'White Noise', starring Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig, based on Don DeLillo's novel. The closing film is Francesco Carrozzini's 'The Hanging Sun – Sole di mezzanotte', starring Alessandro Borghi, based on Jo Nesbø's novel. Barbera noted the festival's awareness of global issues like the war in Ukraine and the arrests of Iranian filmmakers Jafar Panahi, Mohammad Rasoulof, and Mostafa Aleahmad. Other highlights include Olivia Wilde's 'Don't Worry Darling', Darren Aronofsky's 'The Whale', Andrew Dominik's 'Blonde', Alejandro G. Iñárritu's 'Bardo', Martin McDonagh's 'The Banshees of Inisherin', and Florian Zeller's 'The Son'. For the fifth consecutive year, Lorenzo Mattotti designed the festival poster, featuring a lioness on a gold background symbolizing 90 years of the festival. The full lineup includes 23 competition films, plus out-of-competition, Horizons, and special screenings.
